This track is named after a lake in Kazakhstan which was created after a nuclear test conducted in 1965 by the Soviet Union’s Nuclear Explosion Program. On that occasion the blast generated a massive crater, which was then filled with water, giving birth to Lake Chagan, often referred to as the ‘Atomic Lake’.
The video aims to offer a glimpse, the suggestion of a feeling of the world that I could only imagine: polluted, slow, contemplative, still after a great calamity, evoking the atmosphere of the highly radioactive lake with elements within her reach. The film also includes an appearance by performer Yen-Ching Lin: it was important to include the human element, as a way to remember what it once was, or to represent merging with the toxic environment and becoming radioactive itself.

Quattro Movimenti: A Study on Scelsi, commissioned by the London Contemporary Orchestra

Quattro Movimenti: A Study on Scelsi

is a cinematic response to Giacinto Scelsi’s chimeric Strings Trio.

Giacinto Scelsi was a composer whose practice involved breaking any possible narrative within music composition. Shot over a single weekend in Iceland, the film fabricates an alternate earth, a place that is pure and elemental, where Nature exists in primal form. The music holds a constant tension that never reaches its climax nor transforms itself. There is no visual narrative, there is no destination. There are humans and beasts moving in a world which is both their antagonist and their cradle. Time and space are suspended, images are archetypes. Ice, cracked stones, bubbling geysers, lava, black earth, flesh, eyes, scales, hooves, fur... The primal consciousness of being alive, instinctive, violent and pure.

Quattro Movimenti: A Study on Scelsi is a collaboration between Nicol Vizioli and the London Contemporary Orchestra. Scelsi’s String Trio was recorded specially for the film by the London Contemporary Orchestra.
